The Marina Riviera Nayarit in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle received Mexico’s first Blue Flag Marina certification during the XI National Clean Beaches Conference in Cancun recently and the flag was hoisted in a ceremony at the marina on July 16th. Nuevo Vallarta Norte beach also received its Blue Flag. Riviera Nayarit stands out among all of the states of the Mexican Republic with 10 out of 33 Certified Clean Beaches.
The Marina Riviera Nayarit took the spotlight at the conference with this distinction. In addition to being the biggest and most modern marina of its kind on the Pacific, it’s now the environmental model to follow in Mexico. The beaches on the 300-kilometer Riviera Nayarit with the designation are: Bucerías, Nuevo Vallarta Sur and Norte, Nuevo Vallarta II, Playa Palladium in Banderas Bay, Chacala in Compostela, Los Muertos in Sayulita, Costa Capomo and Platanitos in Compostela and El Borrego in San Blas.
The Blue Flag Program works towards sustainable development of beaches and marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education, environmental management, safety and other services. It is a voluntary eco-label awarded to more than 4000 beaches and marinas in 49 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and the Caribbean. The Blue Flag Program is owned and run by the non-government, non-profit organization the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which promotes sustainable development through environmental education.
