1.  Make sure your contractors are clean

You might think that any home renovation project is going to be messy – and there are going to be some messes that you just can’t avoid. For example, knocking down a wall is going to create a bunch of dust, doing a major paint job is going to lead to cans everywhere, and adding on a room is going to necessitate having a ton of heavy equipment all over the place. However, there’s a neat and a not-so-neat way to store all of it. A good contractor will remember that you’re trying to live as normally as possible in your home while all of this work is being done – which is why he’ll instruct his team to clean up at the end of every work day. That way, you won’t wind up tripping over empty paint cans while you try to make dinner or stepping on a wrench collection on your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. You also won’t have to worry about breathing in more dust than you have to. Another biggie on the cleanliness factor? Workers that don’t smoke! Not only will it keep your home smelling fresh and clean, but you won’t have to worry about living in a sea of cigarette butts.

2.  Get enough paint for leftovers

Whether you’re paying someone to paint or donning some overalls and doing the work yourself, make sure you buy enough paint to have enough left over. After all, you never know when you’re going to chip a corner, or when your toddler is going to grab a crayon and turn your wall into a new “art project”. Bottom line – if you don’t have any touch up paint, you’re going to wind up driving back to the home improvement store at some point. But if several years have passed since you painted, your color may be long gone. Are you really willing to live with chips, cracks, and other imperfections just to save a few bucks now?!

3.  Don’t settle for being “done”

If you’re remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, you’re going to have to make a lot of decisions – from the color of the paint on the walls, to the surface on the counters, to the drawer pulls. You may get sick of answering questions and making decisions. However, you’re going to have to live with the choices you make now for years, so choose carefully! If you make a rash decision just for the sake of being “done” with the project, you may live to regret it!

4.  Put some money aside for surprises

If you think you’ve put together the most comprehensive budget possible, think again. You may think you’ve accounted for everything, but you won’t know for sure until the work begins. Even if you’re doing a simple do-it-yourself weekend project, there’s always the possibility of a surprise – like if you pop open a can of paint, spill some on the rug, and have to go rent a steam cleaner to get the stain out. By putting some money aside for surprises, you won’t have to go into debt if something unexpected pops up along the way. And, if nothing pops up, you can take the money and stick it in your savings account. Consider it an interest-bearing bonus for a job well-done!
