At this time real estate professionals are not licensed as they are in the United States and Canada but AMPI, which stands for Asociacion Mexicana de Profesionales Inmobilarios and in English Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals is a private organization that has requirements to meet and maintain in order to be a member.
The requirements for membership in AMPI are 25 hours yearly of continuing education and testing, and foreigners (U.S., Canadian and other countries) working in real estate must be approved to do so by immigration. An AMPI agent is also required to act, maintain, and work in a professional and ethical manner. Failure to do so can cause a member to lose their membership and the privilege to sell real estate in Mexico.
Let all buyers beware of choosing to handle their real estate transaction without an AMPI member. Anyone can claim they are a real estate agent and if there is some “Deal” someone is offering you that sounds too good to be true, guess what, it is. An AMPI agent will help you find the right property for your needs and will help you through the buying process, making it as smooth of a transaction as is possible for you. You don’t want your dream home to become a nightmare investment because you tried to cut corners on professional assistance.

You then call, and or email to contact them for an interview. Or, if you re in the Puerto Vallarta or the Riviera Nayarit area you can ask someone to refer some agents to you and then you can go and meet them in person to do the interview.
